Starlight Village: Mid-Century Modern Meets the 21st Century
Though Donald Deskey, the creator of combed plywood, (Weldtex) produced the material in the late 1940’s, Starlight Village is a great example of a new development that decided to use several of our 50’s vintage plywood products in today’s world.
Folks that have homes built in the 1950’s-1970’s have an obvious need for replacement tiles and panels, but new developers and builders use them as well. Old meets new. So when we got a call from Starlight requesting samples, we were intrigued right off the bat.
In fact, we visited Starlight several years ago, and were given a personal tour by Mike Kopecky. “The developer, Mike Kopecky, teamed with his wife, Theresa Kopecky, and his father, Willie Kopecky. The houses were built by KLM Design Build on Horizon Park Boulevard, on 5.7 acres that Willie Kopecky, a retired U.S. Air Force navigator has owned for decades.” Starlight is located in Leander, Texas, just outside of Austin.
It’s rare that we get to see upfront and personal the actual installation of our products. Sure we get to see pictures that our customers send us, but we decided a visit was in order. Starlight Village and Mike didn’t disappoint. Though at the time some of the homes were not even completed, we got a wonderful introduction to the development.
We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the way the design team incorporated our combed textured plywood, as well as our MCM Eichler siding. Used as interior accent walls, island fronts, and even a flying checker board range hood range hood (profiled in Dwell). Mid-century modern definitely met the 21st century! Mike was a gracious host and took considerable time showing us the model homes.
Outside, owners enjoy a walking trail, dog park, a half-acre nature preserve and an amazing open air pool. A loop road was created through the project to create a neighborhood feeling, where people can gather together. The surroundings are just stunning. Like many neighborhoods from the past, here at Starlight, community connection is a high value. Not only does the wonderful MCM design bring the sunlight inward, neighbors are drawn outward to greet, meet, and enjoy the wonderful amenities.
